Elephanta caves natively known as Gharapuri are a network of sculpted caves located at elephanta island in mumbai harbour 10 kms on the east of the city these hindu caves contains rock cut stone sculptures representing the shiva lord shiva the rock cut architecture of the caves has been dated to between 5th to 8th centuries the main cave was a hindu of worship until portugese rule begain in 1534 after which the caves suffered severe damage it was renovated in 1970s and was designated a unesco world heritage site in 1987 so you are not only invited to caves but even our guide takes you to the small village which is located right at the island where very small population people lived there.
